Large windows a remnant of the industrial heritage of the building bring in a flood of natural light giving the open living area kitchen and dining space a cheerful and breezy appeal. While the living space has an air of urban contemporary elegance it is the kitchen that adds the distinct industrial flavor with its stainless steel sink workstation and other metallic elements.
Designed by Wunschhaus Architektur and spread across 411 square meters the 3-story house has a wonderful indoor-outdoor interplay thanks to the extensive use of sweeping glass walls and large glass doors. While the creation of a light-filled interior was one of the prime objectives here the homeowners also wanted an interior that encouraged interaction between family members with each space flowing into the next.
As is the case with most contemporary homes these days the living areas on the lower level and the bedrooms on top floor open up toward a large deck complete with a pool and an outdoor dining space. Glossy finishes in the kitchen and bathroom a plush Togo Sofa in the living room and a curated splash of color in the dining room complete a refined and relaxing residence.
A series of walkways and bridges along with the central staircase and elevator accomplish this with ease even as a wonderful atrium further aids in creating a cheerful and airy living space.
Open wooden cabinets and the wooden cabin-style bedroom create further textural contrast without ever altering the more curated atmosphere of the penthouse. Each of the four bedrooms is given its own unique look with subtle changes in décor to ensure every space has a special exclusive feel even while seeming like an extension of the central living area.
The distinctive design of the residence came about by combining the homeowners’ desire for a multi-generational home that will serve them well for years to come with the vision of the architects that tapped into the 17-degree slope of the lot. It is the ground level that contains the sparkling glass-walled central kitchen dining and living space that flows into the green garden and pool area outside.
The new Cor-Ten steel structure flows into the landscape that surrounds the house and acts as a lovely and functional transitional zone between the interior and the outdoors. The color of the extension allows it to complement the existing brick structure of the home beautifully even as metal and glass bring a healthy dose of textural contrast and modernity to the setting.
